Celebrating 1 Year of Being on YouTube

Today is a very special day.

One year ago today, I decided to launch a YouTube channel. I had spent months, trying to figure out what my “niche” should be. I had launched a YouTube channel before and while it grew to over 500 subscribers, it never quite monetized. I wasn’t really sure what to expect. My other channel did okay, but I feared that this new channel would also just do okay.

My wife and I prepared by taking courses and explored different recording styles. I even hired an intern Antonio M. to help out with the initial videos and ideas. After months of delay, mainly because of my fear, I decided to finally launch my channel.

I promoted my new channel to my friends and family and the channel received a few dozen subscribers. My only goal for this channel was to monetize it. To make it to 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of watch time that YouTube requires for a channel to monetize.

Let me tell you, this road is a long one. First 4 months, I had a steady growth of about 5–10 subscribers a week. Every day, during those first 4 months, I wanted to quit because it’s tough to see you put in all this work into something that isn’t working or growing at the rate you wish it would.

Around May time frame, I decided to launch the Summer of Jira. This would be an exhaustive 100 day challenge to post a video every week day during the roughly 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day. At first, nothing happened, but after a couple weeks, I started picking up some momentum. As the Summer progressed, the number of subscribers started growing. I hosted live streams to boost my watch hours. I posted 5 videos a week, every week for 12 weeks. I developed a plan, schedule, and ultimately a workflow to get my videos published.

Then, in September, I hit my goal! I monetized my channel in roughly nine months. I slowed my efforts down a bit because posting five days a week takes a tremendous amount of energy and coordination. Since September my channel has continue to grow each every day. With every new day, record views being achieved and now I typically see anywhere between 5–15 new subscribers a day!

So, on this 1 year anniversary, I want to thank each every person that has subscribed. You fueled me to wake up at 5 am on Saturdays and Sundays to record my videos. Today, I’m at 2,613 subscribers. A number that I only dreamed about. My goal is to hit 3,000 subscribers by the end of the year. I’m optimistic that I’ll hit it, but if you are reading this and you haven’t subscribed, consider supporting the channel and clicking on that subscribe button!

And finally, if you are feeling extra generous today, consider subscribing to that first channel my wife and I created. We are hoping to monetize that channel in 2023 and have big plans for that channel as well.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support.
